Weekly Update: 1/3

Hello!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful break. 

This week we are learning:
ELA: Write to Narrate, Main idea and details
Math: Telling time to the hour
Science: Weather and Seasons (reading a thermometer)
Social Studies: Landforms and Maps

Spelling words: so, hole, joke, bone, go, no, poke, chose, home, rope, stove
Sight Words: around, bring, show, because, carry, think, before, light

Homework: Homework packets are going home today and will be due on the 13th.

Upcoming events:
TPRI Testing will take place the 11th-13th
Field trip to Casa Manana February 23rd (details to come last week in January)
Monthly Reading Contest (remainder of the year)

Reader of the Month Contest: School Wide

Reader of the Month Contest

Contest
Each month students will have the opportunity to win a Kindle Touch or gift cards from Barnes & Noble/ Half Price
Books by reading and participating in the Accelerated Reader program.
Rules
For each AR book a student reads and receives an 85 or above on an AR Reading Practice Quiz, then they will
receive one entry into the monthly drawing. There is no limit on the amount of books or AR quizzes a student can
take. For example, if a student reads The Hunger Games, takes an AR quiz on that book, and scores 85 or above,
that student will get one entry into the contest. If a student reads three AR books and scores 85 or above on all
three quizzes, then they will have three entries into the drawing with three chances to win. The contest will start
over at the beginning of each month.
Eligibility
In order for a student to be eligible they must meet the following requirements.



Must take an AR Reading Practice Quiz and make at least an 85 or above on the quiz.
Must read books on their reading level. English teachers will verify their reading level.
Students who win the first place prize will not be eligible for the Kindle again but will be eligible for 2nd and
3rd place prizes.

Grades K-5 Drawing
1st Place - Kindle Touch (Optional -Leapfrog reader Tablet for students in Kindergarten or 1st Grade)
2nd Place - $30 Gift card to Barnes and Noble or Half Price Books
3rd Place - $20 Gift Card to Barnes and Noble or Half Price Books
Grades 6-12 Drawing
1st Place - Kindle Touch
2nd Place - $30 Gift card to Barnes and Noble or Half Price Books

Weekly Update 12.12-12.16

Hello Parents!

We are counting down until break!  Thank you to everyone who signed up to help with Holidays Around the World and our Breakfast Party.  We really could not do everything we do in the classroom without the wonderful support yall provide as parents.

This week there will not be homework.  We are working on an animal research project in class, sharing our recycling projects (due 12/14), learning about Holidays Around the World, and working with numbers 50-80.
Below is a reminder about events taking place this week. 

  Holidays Around the World December 12th and 13th
                The kids will visit different classrooms and learn about holidays celebrated in other countries.

Early dismissal at 1pm on Thursday the 15th and Friday the 16thDecember 15th
We are having a Winter Breakfast Party on December 15th at 8:45 am.  We will be making pancakes and have other breakfast foods. We will continue the day with a book exchange, crafts, and games. Book Exchange: For the book exchange please send a wrapped book (gender friendly), around $5.00.  Students who bring a book will play a game and exchange books.  If a student does not bring a book they will not be able to participate.  Games: The kids can bring a board game to play with classmates.  Please make sure your last name is somewhere on the game.   We are learning about money right now so money games would reinforce those skills. 

December 16th

On December 16th we will have our Holiday program at 9am in the cafeteria.  We will then watch Polar Express in the classroom.  Students may wear pajama’s (dress code appropriate) to school.  Please make sure your child has appropriate shoes for outdoor play.

Recycling Project Due 12/14

Instructions
·        Make something new from something used! Use some of the following materials to make a new useful item:
o   Paper
o   Plastic
o   Metal
NO GLASS- Point will be deducted
·        Prepare a tri-fold presentation paper (to be provided).  The sections should be labeled with the following heading:
o   Name of item
o   Purpose of item                 
o   Materials Used
·        Each section should contain a complete sentence related to the heading.
·        All writing must be hand written and in the student’s handwriting.
Grading Rubric:

Completed in students handwriting (neatly)
25 points
Completion (all four parts of project)
25 points
Item has a purpose
25 points
Used appropriate materials
25 points
TOTAL POSSIBLE

Holiday Information

Hello Parents-
We are having a Winter Breakfast Party on December 15th at 8:45 am.  We will be making pancakes and have other breakfast foods. We will continue the day with a book exchange, crafts, and games.
If you are able to send a food item pleases sign up through www.signupgenius.com (Mrs. Nelson's First Grade Winter Breakfast Party). The signup went out today.  Please leave a comment if you will be able to attend and help with the pancakes and passing out of food.
Book Exchange:
For the book exchange please send a wrapped book (gender friendly), around $5.00.  Students who bring a book will play a game and exchange books.  If a student does not bring a book they will not be able to participate.

Holiday card for the military:
Parents we have an opportunity to send cards to service men and women for the holidays.   If you would like to make a "Happy Holiday's" card with your child please do so over the weekend and send it to school with your child.  We will make some cards in centers next week, but our time is limited and we need to have some ready to send by Tuesday. Thanks in advance for you support!
